While reading the book The Detox Strategy by Brenda Watson I came across a page that lists the Top 10 Toxins Most Wanted list.
Needless to I recognized 9 out of the 10 that can be found within commercial natural hair products.
What does this say about your hair’s toxicity level?
How is this affecting your overall health?
My personal goal is to detox during every season change… but so far this year I have only done a 4 day juice fast. However, after going over this list I need to do a detox of all products in my mini beauty supply store (closet) that contain these items. What good is it to cleanse the inside when you are applying the same toxins right back onto your body.
Toxins: Top 10 Most Wanted List
Methyl, propyl, butyl,& ethyl Parabens– help to extend shelf life of products to prevent microbial growth. Causes: allergic reactions, skin rashes, weak estrogenic (could be responsible for growth of breast tumors). Frequently used in antiperspirants linked to breast cancer.
Diethanolamine (DEA), Triethanolamine (TEA)– Used as emulsifiers and/or foaming agents. Causes: allergic reactions, eye irritations, dryness of hair & skin. They are ammonia compounds which combine with nitrates to produce carcinogenic compounds.
Petrolatum– mineral oil derivative is used to emollient the skin. It has NO nutrient value and can interfere with the body’s natural moisturizing mechanism. Causes: Dry & chapped skin and hair.
Sodium lauryl/lauret sulfate- this was the most common one I see especially in shampoos and even shower gels. It is a cheap harsh detergent used for its foaming properties. Causes:skin rashes, eye irritation, scalp scurf similar to dandruff.
Proylene glycol-this is a synthetic mix of vegetable glycerin and grain alcohol to be used as a humectant. Causes: hives, eczema, and allergic reactions.
PVP/VA copolymer-petroleum derived chemical used in hair sprays, styling aids, and other cosmetics. Causes: when inhaled can damage lungs of sensitive people.
Stearalkonium chloride- is a ammonium compound found in conditioners and creams. Was originally used a fabric softener and is a lot cheaper than herb and proteins which effectively condition hair.
Synthetic colors- Along with hair dyes used carcinogenic synthetic colors. Avoid!!
Synthetic fragrances- can have over 100 chemicals since most companies just list fragrance and not the chemical compound. Causes: headaches, dizziness, rash, hyperpigmentation (common problem among blacks), vomiting, skin irritation, violent coughing.
Through my own personal natural hair consultations and through my website I always advocate all natural products for skin and hair because it will yield positive results for your body’s overall health.
Even before birth we are exposed to thousand of chemicals a day. Just be mindful of the ones you willingly put into your system.
The next time you are faced with hair dryness, breakage, or skin ailments take a glance at the products you are using to see if these nasty little guys are listed. It very well could be the cause.
