Natural Hair Styles: Comb Coils

Comb coils  is a natural hair style that is commonly associated with starting dreadlocks. However, comb coils is great natural hair style  for TWA’s and ear length hair. Comb coils have several different aliases such as gel twists, single strand twists, and coils. The variation comes from the technique used to create these coils such as the rat tail comb.

You will find it harder to do these coils on longer hair as the shape will not maintain on longer lengths. So if you are looking for a change in rocking your TWA  or grown out TWA try this look.

How to create Comb Coils

Tools:

alcohol free gel

Suggestions:

  • Organic Root Stimulator Lock and Twist Gel
  • Afiya Loc and Twist Gel
  • Fantasia IC gel

Rat tail comb

spray bottle ( to keep hair damp)

TIP: If you do the coils on larger sections you can unravel the individual coils to have straw set effect on your natural hair.

Visual Aid:

  1. Wash
  2. tajuannacombcoilsCondition 
  3. Detangle your hair
  4. Using a comb or your fingers part hair in whatever shape you desire (square or triangle)
  5. Apply gel of choice to length of hair and comb through.
  6. Wrap hair around the tail end of the comb.
  7. Twirl the comb slowly in a clockwise direction while pulling the comb out of the coil.
  8. Repeat steps 4-7 until your entire head is complete.
