Washing Natural Hair
A great natural hair regimen starts with washing your natural hair regularly. Clean hair and scalp rids the hair of dirt, product buildup, and other impurities.
Many people can become deceived in the proper way to wash your hair. We all have seen the notorious shampoo commercials where the women later their hair from root to tip and swirl the hair around at the top of the head. This method can wreek damage on natural hair by causing tangles and damage.
Your hair is the most vulnerable in its WET natural stage, so it is very important to be as gentle as possible.
There are many ways in which to wash your natural hair:
- Co washing- using a moisturizing conditioner to clean the hair.
- Sulfate Free Shampoo- a shampoo that cleans the hair without the drying Sulfates seen in traditional shampoos.
- Moisturizing Shampoo- a traditional shampoo that includes sulfates (which makes the shampoo lather and sudsy) but can have moisturizing ingredients also added. (ie. Suave, VO5, Herbal Essences)
- Clarifying Shampoo – a shampoo that clarifies the scalp to get rid of heavy product build up.
- Baking Soda & Apple Cider Vinegar method- cleaning the scalp using baking soda & apple cider vinegar.
Whatever method you choose to use to wash your here are some steps to following when cleaning your natural hair and scalp:
- Wet hair thoroughly with water.
- Separate your hair into to two or four sections. TIP: four sections work best if your hair is thick and/or coarse.
- Take a dollop of your choice of cleaning agent and evenly apply it to all sections starting at the nape of the neck.
- Begin by taking your finger tips only (not your finger nails) and massaging the scalp in each section to loosen any dirt, dead skin cells, and buildup.
- Rinse out the shampoo thoroughly ensuring there is no shampoo left behind.

Once hair is fully cleaned you are now ready for Step 2 of conditioning your natural hair.
