Conditioning Natural Hair

curly hairStep two of the natural hair regimen process involves conditioning your natural hair. This step is very important as it will add necessary moisture back into your hair especially if you used a clarifying shampoo or a traditional shampoo that includes sulfates.

Naturally curly  and kinky hair is very dry and prone to breakage due to the structure of our hair follicles and the sebum and natural oils not being able to reach the ends of our hair as they would with straight hair.

There are several types of conditioners:

In this article we will focus on conditioning natural hair with your basic instant conditioner following shampooing your natural hair.

  1. After washing your natural hair in four sections.
  2. Pour your desired conditioner into the palms of your hands and rub them together.
  3. Take a dollop of conditioner and apply it to each section of hair. It is best if the conditioner has slip to make it easier to detangle.
  4. Take a wide tooth comb or tangle teezer and begin to detangle the hair from bottom to top.
  5. When all sections are detangled rinse conditioner out.
  6. For added shine and to seal the hair cuticles rinse your hair one last time with cool water.

If your hair is in need of a deep conditioning treatment you would follow this procedure in step 3.

I love the picture in this article. I am glad you touch on the different types of conditioners. So few clients know the difference that many come to salons with damage from protein conditioners because they do not know the proper use of them. Too much protein in the hair could be just as damaging as any chemicals put in the hair.
