Washing Dreadlocks

washing dreadlocksWashing dreadlocks is essential to the long term maintenance of the dreadlocks. The most popular misconception about dreadlocks is that they are unclean or have to be dirty in order to start dreadlocks.

Cleansing the Scalp

You may use dry shampoo to temporary refresh your scalp.

Use pieces of gauze dipped in the dry shampoo and rub it on to your scalp with a massaging motion. After 2 or 3 swipes of the scalp repeat with a fresh piece of gauze.

Shampooing Dreadlocks that are not fully locked

When you have baby dreadlocks or buds that are just starting to form, your dreadlocks may unravel when shampooing. The urban legend that dirty dreadlocks lock faster has sprung from this notion as you will have to retwist the lock if they unravel after shampooing.

If your dreadlocks are not fully locked yet it is best to shampoo between every week or two weeks with cleaning your scalp in between to give your hair enough time to mesh into the coiled dreadlock.

TIP: It is best to use all natural products and residue free shampoos to reduce and/or eliminate the amount of build up on the dreadlocks.

All this information (and that from other sites as well!) has been such a help as I consider beginning my own journey. I’m in my forties, and bald in the front, but this is something I’ve wanted to do since my teens. Photos may follow; stay tuned!
