My Hair,My Story: Chakecia

How did you transition and what was your transition style?
I transitioned with braids. At the time I didn’t consider myself “transitioning” because I never saw myself wearing my hair curly. There were NO naturals in my city and I knew absolutely nothing about caring for my hair in its natural state.
Why did you decide to go natural?
I stopped relaxing my hair in 2007 because my Aunt said I should. I knew she didn’t have a relaxer and she pressed her hair ever 2 weeks and it was healthy, so why not? After beginning research on healthy hair practices in 2009 and seeing other naturals rock their fros I began to see the beauty in my natural hair and wanted to explore it.
When was your first perm?
psshhh! before i could remember. I believe my mom texturized my hair when I was 3 or 4
What are your hair goals? (short term & long term)
Goals…?? I just want healthy hair… and if it ends up at my waist I won’t complain (=
What was/is the biggest challenge you face with your hair?
Putting on a brave face for those who don’t understand was probably my biggest challenge. Even when I wasn’t confident about my hair I had to pretend I was so others didn’t think they could break me. Those comments hurt sometimes so developing a thinker skin was definitely a must.
What’s the craziest thing you ever done to you hair? (permed/natural or otherwise)
I don’t do crazy things really. I’ve colored it though and its been a process! I love it now but it took some adjusting.
What are your staple products?
Hawaiian Silky 14-in-1 Miracle Worker as my leave in, DevaCurl One condition. I’m loving the DevaCurl line right now but I’m still testing things out.
What is your advice to women who are considering going natural?
RESEARCH! It’s so important that you don’t just take someone’s word for it. Try it out yourself see how you like it and come to your own conclusions.
