Natural Hair Styles: Wash and Go

Wash and go is a common natural hair style that includes wetting the hair and applying a styling product or gel to hold your natural curl, coil, or wave pattern. This style is also referred to as a Wash and Wear, Wet and Go, or Wet look.

Wash and gos are an excellent go to style in the warmer months as the hair needs to air dry. This style is normally the first style most new naturals learn how to do because of the ease and manageability.

To achieve a wash and go follow these instructions:

Tools needed:

  • Moisturizing Conditioner
  • Leave in Conditioner
  • Oil
  • Styling Product or Gel
  • accessories (headbands, clips, bows, flowers, etc) *optional*
  • Diffuser
  • microfiber towel

Suggested Products

To get optimum results it is best that your hair is soaking wet. To avoid making a mess it is advised to do you wash and go in the shower.

1.Wash, Condition, and Detangle hair. I love to use my tangle teezer to get tangles out faster and its also great for aiding in curl definition. It is important to detangle hair during this stage as you will not want to manipulate the hair once the product is applied to decrease matting and frizz.

2.Rinse conditioner out with cool water.

3. Apply Leave in Condtioner or Oil of choice for added moisture. This will seal in the moisture  and allow your hair to remain moisturized and not dry out from the gel or styling product.

4. Separate hair in 4 sections and apply  styling product or gel. Finger comb the product through each section. If hair is thick take smaller sections from the larger four sections and pull the product through.

* make sure hair stays wet through the process. Keep spray bottle on hand if hair starts to dry*

5.Don’t touch the hair and allow to air dry. If you are short on time or it is a little chilly outside use a diffuser to lightly dry hair.

Other methods of achieving a wash and go includes:

Shake and go: apply product after the leave in conditioner/oil step all over hair. Place a towel over your face and shake head (like saying no)

Plopping or Plunking

Using denman brush to further define curls: Use a Denman brush after applying a stylin product or gel to your curly hair and brushing over it to define curls.

  1. I love the idea of a wash and go, but how does this work if you have two different hair textures? I’m afraid I’d look a mess if I tried this. The top half of my hair has very loose waves and never curls. The bottom half is thick, spongy cotton w/no visible curl pattern.
