  1. It all begin about 7 years ago when I needed to detox my body because I felt as if I was not my healthiest self. I was diagnosed with high blood pressure so I started researching the causes of different diseases that were plaguing the black community- disease like high blood pressure, diabetes, fibroids, etc.   This led me down the path of holistic living. My life was changed and I never looked back. I not only began to eat natural foods and prepare them for my family, I also was very conscious about the products that I was using on my hair and skin as well.  So, long story short, I went to my husband, who was heading up Engineering for L’Oreal at that time and asked him to formulate green products that we could take to market.

  1. In two years, I would love to see CUSH in many salons across the world.  We are slowly drumming up a lot of interest with
    ultimate hair elixir

My first product I tried from Cush smells like cherry coke :0) moisturizes my hair and skin wonderfully!

salons both state side and overseas, so it will be interesting to see our progress in a two year time frame.

  1. It is extremely critical that we support black owned businesses and that black owned businesses support black communities in return.  It is a two-way street for reasons that I feel are obvious.  Again, it‘s very basic math, if we do not circulate a portion of our dollars back into black communities, we suffer as a race because things that contribute to the success of us as a people,  will not have the funding to come to fruition.  If you look at any race that you define as successful, you will find that they support each other’s businesses, and that support leads to creating jobs in their communities, which leads to economic empowerment for their race.   It’s that simple.

Our specialty products for hair are the Huile Supreme Styling Cream, the Curl Extender, and the Mango Pomade.  We also get rave reviews on our bubble bath bombs and body oils because they provide a luxury bath experience for the overworked woman, which is the average woman today.

  1. I have always worn my hair natural off and on.  After I finished college, I cut my hair and rocked the ceasar cut for about a year and eventually grew it out. I wore a big curly fro style for about 2 years.  It’s funny because I was in management in corporate America and had to pull it back in a bun when I went to work. When I would occasionally wear it out, I would get some interesting comments.

Eventually I permed it again.  Then I got bored with perming it, especially since it burns so badly. I thought, why am I torturing myself-LOL.  Again, I cut it all off and went natural for about 7 years.  Last May, when we launched CUSH, my hair was natural and I decided to perm it. I wanted a different look because I had been wearing it natural for so long.  I wore it permed for about 4 months.  CUSH was quickly becoming a favorite for women who were natural, which was very exciting to me.   When I first went natural, we did not have this huge support system that you have today. So to see that and feel that energy was awesome.  It inspired me to reconsider my perm and to join the natural movement.  For me, it really is about the mood I am in.  When I was wearing my hair natural way back in the day, it really was blasphemous-LOL back then, especially when I returned home to Memphis to show my family.  I am thankful that I eventually obtained the confidence to define and embrace my natural beauty and not rely so much on conventional standards. I really applaud this natural movement today-what an inspiration to young girls who will hopefully, learn to love their hair because they have role models who look like them, and they are also defining and embracing their black beauty.
