Natural Hair styles: two strand twists
A staple natural hair style are the two strand twists. If you are just going natural you may have worn twist as a child with the barrettes at the ends. But now twists have a grown up flavor!
Twists can be worn a number of ways, including with or without extensions. I personally like to wears twists in a high bun or set on rollers for a curly look. A lot of women wear twists as a protective style since the hair will not be manipulated.
In order to achieve this look follow these steps:
What you will need:
- leave in conditioner
- clips
- spray bottle w/water
- wide tooth comb
- rat tail comb (optional)
- gel or styling creme
- blow dryer (optional)
- oil of choice (coconut, jojoba, castor)
Suggested Products:
- Organic Root Stimulator Lock & Twist Gel
- Low Budget Curly Pudding
- Curls Whipped Cream
Wash & Condition
Begin by washing your hair and cleansing your scalp with shampoo or conditioner if you use the cowash method. After applying your choice of conditioner and begin to detangle hair using a wide tooth comb to free hair of any mats, knots, or tangles.
Styling
Separate hair in four sections to make sure you detangle all hair. This is especially helpful if you have thick hair.
Clip the remaining 3 sections leaving one section out to begin twisting. It might be helpful to begin twisting in the back and work your way to the front.
There are two methods in which to two strand twist. You can twist natural hair either wet/damp or dry.

Twisting on Wet/Damp Hair
Taking the first section finger comb styling product through hair. It is your choice if you would like to part hair with a rat tail comb or finger part. Take about 1 inch (or
smaller) sections and begin to wrap the two strands around each other. When you reach the ends apply a bit of oil and gel while twirling it around your finger to produce a curl.
Repeat until all four sections are complete.
Twisting on Dry Hair
Twisting on dry hair has the advantages of elongating the twists. Twists down on wet hair are prone to shrinkage.
When twisting on dry hair apply a heat protectant and lightly blow dry hair in four sections. Switching between cool and warm settings to ensure proper heat levels to prevent heat damage.
Once hair is about 90% dry apply oil and styling cream.
Take about 1 inch (or smaller) sections and begin to wrap the two strands around each other. When you reach the ends apply a bit of oil and gel while twirling it around your finger to produce a curl.
Finishing
After all twists are complete lightly oil twists and cover with a satin scarf and bonnet.
Bonus Tip: To keep twists laying flat I like to take duckbill clips and place them throughout the length of hair.
