Natural Hair Styles: Puff

The puff is one of the easiest go to natural hair styles. I would recommend having at least 4 -5 inches of hair to push back for this particular style. The beauty of the puff is the versatility and how it can be worn. The puff is commonly worn high in the center of the head. But to add certain a twist to this style the puff can be worn to the front of the head or lower towards the nape of the neck. What you will need:

  • soft brush
  • gel
  • moisturizer
  • scrunchy/pantyhose/ headband etc
  • satin scarf
  • leave in conditioner

Suggested Products:

Wash & Condition

For a fresh puff you will have  best results on freshly washed and conditioned hair. Begin by washing your hair and cleansing your scalp with shampoo or conditioner if you use the cowash method.

After applying your choice of conditioner begin to detangle  hair using a wide tooth comb to free hair of any mats, knots, or tangles. This step is important as the hair will not be combed while styling for the puff. I find it easier to seperate hair in four sections to make sure you detangle all hair. This is especially helpful if you have thick hair. Rinse conditioner out.

Moisturize

Separate the hair to add shape to the puff. I even sprayed in some color to add some spice to the puff.

Finger comb in the leave in conditioner throughout the four separated sections. Follow up with the moisturizer (oil, butter, cream) applying throughout your hair focusing on the ends.

Styling

Apply gel and brush product through with the soft brush.

For shorter hair: Take pantyhose and push hair back until it gathers towards the middle of head.  You can also use clips to secure hair as well.Secure and fluff to give shape.

For medium to longer hair: Take scrunchy/pantyhose and gather hair in position that you choose (towards nape, middle, or front of head). Secure with headband and fluff to give shape.

For waves and smooth edges: apply gel or pomade to front of hair and smooth with brush. Tie down front of hair with satin scarf to flatten. Leave scarf on for minimum of 15 mins for smooth hair.
