My Hair.My Story: Jonna
How did you transition and what was your transition style?
My transition was very unsuccessful, so I didn’t have a transition style. My natural hair was so thick in comparison to my relaxed hair, that it would tangle and break whenever I washed my hair. Most days I couldn’t even part my hair without snap, crack, pop sounds. So I would just wear it in a bun. I got my last relaxer July 2008, and I barely made it 6 months before I bc’d in December 2008.
Why did you decide to go natural? I wanted to focus on a more healthy lifestyle all around. And I saw many natural women wearing such a variety of hair styles, so I wanted to see what my hair could do relaxer-free.
When was your first perm?
When was your first perm?
I think I was probably 12.
What are your hair goals? (short term & long term)
My short term goal is to incorporate ayurvedic treatments and protective styles into my hair care routine. My long term goal is to just make my hair as healthy and long as possible and use 100% natural products.
What was/is the biggest challenge you face with your hair?
The biggest challenge I faced initially was learning what my hair could and couldn’t do. I was watching so many YouTube videos and reading so many blogs, and everything that I tried just didn’t work for me. But I couldn’t let that discourage me. The biggest challenge I face now is finding the time and energy to dedicate to my hair. As my hair gets longer, it takes more time to wash, condition, detangle and style. So I’m working to come up with a routine and making a schedule to stick to for “hair time”.
What’s the craziest thing you ever done to you hair? (permed/natural or otherwise)
What’s the craziest thing you ever done to you hair? (permed/natural or otherwise)
My mom never let me do anything crazy to my hair. So even when I got “grown” I was still scared to do anything crazy. BTW – My mom went natural and bc’d in January 2010.
What are your staple products?
Coconut oil, shea butter, aloe vera juice/gel, my homemade tea tree shampoo, african black soap, SheaMoisture Deep Treatment Mask, Curl & Style Milk, Curl Enhancing Smoothie
What is your advice to women who are considering going natural? My advice would be to do lots of research, but at the same time be prepared for your hair and your journey to be unique. There will be hair envy moments, but don’t let that turn into contempt of your own hair. Make sure you know your “why” for going natural, because you will have to be secure in that reason in order to combat the negativity that may come from others and from yourself when things don’t go as planned. And know that it is truly a journey and not a destination, so be patient.
